EDU 6888B - Clinical Practice IV: K-12 Special Education (Student Teachers)(1.5 units) EDU 6888 A/B “Clinical Practice III and IV” is common called Student Teaching. Student teachers will work under the guidance and instruction of a mentoring teacher. Mentoring teachers earned clear credentials, have a Masters degree, have been recommended by their principals to serve in this capacity, and has a history of success in the K-12 classroom.
Student teachers often start out in Clinical Practice III as an observer, move towards one-to-one or small group instruction, conduct whole class instruction for part of the day, and eventually the student teacher will take over all aspects of teaching responsibilities, under the guidance of their mentor teacher. Student teachers are evaluated and coached by a university supervisor. The university supervisor will conduct 6 formal evaluations of the student teacher and the mentoring teacher will conduct two formal observations. During Clinical Practice III and IV, student teachers are required to be at their school site for the contracted hours of a full-time teacher working in that school.
Student teachers will learn pedagogy, classroom management skills, differentiated instruction, assessment, IEP development, and Behavior Support Plan development. By the end of Clinical Practice IV, student teachers will have experience in all aspects of the job duties of an educational specialist.
