PSY85190 - Theory and Practice: Buddhist Psychotherapy

(3 units)
Theory and Practice: Buddhist Psychotherapy will introduce students to the fundamental teachings of Early Buddhism as found in the Suttapitaka with relevant sections of the Theravadan Abhidhamma. Early Buddhism, as distinguished from Buddhism, was a meditative and contemplative practice. This course covers both philosophical and practice aspects of what Buddha Gautama taught when he claimed “both formerly and now what I teach is suffering and the cessation of suffering” (MN 22.38), meaning early Buddhism was a psychotherapeutic treatment approach to human suffering.
