PSY85023F - Clinical Elective: Global Community Mental Health

(3 Units)
This course will prepare students to look at the development and evolution of psychology in a variety of cultural and sociopolitical contexts. The United States has a rich history when considering psychology, however, it is still evolving when it comes to addressing the varying needs of the diversifying population, fully understanding how culture impacts what the needs of and reception of services by that diverse population and providing trainees with opportunities that enhance their cultural competence beyond a traditional diversity course that involves depth readings and reflections. Through a variety of methods and activities, students will be able to gain insights into the unique ways psychologists build capacity globally and understand potential career paths outside of those solely based within the US (such as through NGOs and established psychological institutions within Mexico and South Africa).
