Sustainable Management: MPA


Sustainable management is a comprehensive management framework that bridges the gap between commerce and the common good. It’s a strategic approach to management and policy that requires a blending of social, natural and financial capital to create an integrated bottom line. This means sustainable management considers not just the financial benefits of a decision, but also its economic, environmental and social impact. By doing so, sustainable management transforms business and public policy to bring about a more just, prosperous and sustainable world.

The program integrates principles of sustainable management into core coursework while building the skills to think and act systemically in addressing our most compelling policy issues, whether energy, infrastructure, healthcare or housing.

Program Outcomes


Students will be able to:

  • Understand the interdependence of social, economic, and ecological problems and the interdependence of business, government and civil society, and the possibility for integrated solutions.
  • Conceptualize interconnections between larger systems and apply systems thinking principles and tools to design and plan public policy and administrative models.
  • Apply system thinking principles and tools to design public policy.
  • Practice creativity, self-assessment, and ethical decision-making, and forge shared commitments to resilient solutions that focus on long-term systemic strategies and outcomes.
  • Convene, include, understand and respect diverse stakeholder perspectives in decision making to mobilize, motivate, and achieve collective action on complex problems.
  • Understand sustainability and its application in a pragmatic, historical and global context, and manage public finance and budgets sustainably.
  • Interpret and prioritize ecological and social issues that have an impact on the public good.
  • Apply principles and frameworks of sustainable management and performance measurement to orient and guide policy making and public administration.

The Sustainable Management: MPA program is not currently accepting applications.

Experiential Learning (EL)


Experiential Learning (EL) is a key part of our educational program. Using this “living case” methodology, students are able to gain experience in the workplace and learn how to apply the skills learned through the program. Additionally, this is an opportunity for students to gain relevant work experience to benefit their careers. Teams of 3-5 students are paired with an organization and work with them over the course of a semester on a specific project. EL projects are embedded in the following courses:
