Program Description/Overview
This program provides teacher candidates with the history of the use of languages other than English in California schools. Candidates develop an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of educational practices related to bilingual education. Bilingual teacher candidates recognize and teach in various models of bilingual programs, whether they serve students who are learning English, or meeting the needs of English proficient students who are developing proficiency in a second language. Bilingual teachers also serve as resources to enable their students to become productive members of a global society. They also represent a cultural and linguistic bridge that links the bilingual community to the larger society. They understand that their students and parents are valuable linguistic and cultural resources.
