Masters of Arts in Education (MAE) with Teaching Credential


The Master of Arts in Education (MAE) degree program in Teaching and in Education Specialists are designed to provide a rich sequence for learning experiences in which graduates gain the requisite knowledge and skills to serve effectively as educational leaders, action researchers, and practitioners in Professional Learning Communities.  The Teacher Credential Programs are embedded within the Hufstedler School of Education’s MAE: Teaching Programs; the teaching credential and MAE degree may be obtained concurrently.  The MAE: Teaching degree program is also a “stand-alone” degree program which may be pursued independently from the credential program.

The Master of Arts in Education (MAE): Teaching degree program builds academic cohorts of teachers online, engaging school and classroom leaders from throughout the world in online settings and virtual academic environments.  The program is also delivered at our Mexico City campus in a cohort hybrid model engaging Candidates in both on-ground and online hybrid classes.  The Teacher Credential Programs are embedded within the Hufstedler School of Education’s MAE: Teaching Programs; the degree in teaching and teaching credential may be obtained concurrently.

Program Outcomes: Students will be able to:

  • Design critical thinking lessons, programs, and educational learning communities such that their students are aware of critical thinking strategies and can articulate how they are thinking critically.
  • Apply and advance teaching and learning theories, strategies, and pedagogical methodologies to their planning, classroom lessons, and curricular design such that professional learning communities are established, supporting high stakes learning for all learners.
  • Consistently apply and advance comprehensive, responsive and accountable assessment systems to their professional learning community to assure and advance the action-driven monitoring and evaluating of student progress.
  • Embed action research methods in their professional practice as well as applying informed evaluation of professional literature to their practice.
  • Consistently integrate informed methods and practices of technology into their professional learning community and practice.
  • Establish, support, and assure an inclusive and responsive school setting for all students, families, and communities
  • Embed multicultural understanding and support, language literacy, and sociological concepts into their professional practice in order to create culturally responsive classroom in support of the diverse student population’s learning and advancement.

GPA Requirement: Once admitted to the Program, applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher in all coursework. Students failing to maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 at the end of any term will be placed on academic warning and must correct the deficiency by the following semester or be subject to academic dismissal from the program.

Degrees are posted to the official university transcript through the Registrar’s Office at Candidate request. Completion of degree program is verified by the Registrar as per the Master Plan of Study. All courses below are three units (3) unless otherwise noted.

Transfer of Credit
Transfer of credit may be awarded on the following basis:

  1. A maximum of:
    a.  EdD Program: 24 semester units beyond the master’s degree may be transferred from a regionally accredited institution. All such coursework must have been earned in addition to the master’s degree required coursework.
    b.  MAE / Credential Programs: 6 semester units beyond the bachelor’s degree may be transferred from a regionally accredited institution. All such coursework must have been earned in addition to the bachelor’s degree required coursework. Requests for additional units transferred from HSOE collaborating universities may be considered by the Systemwide Program Director and the Dean of HSOE.
  2. The request to accept credit to be transferred must be approved by the program director.
  3. Credit that has been used to complete a second master’s degree may be considered for transfer to the EdD Program.
  4. Credits must have been earned within seven years prior to the request for transfer. Waivers of this requirement may be considered by program faculty on a case by case basis. All waivers must be approved by the dean.
  5. Extension courses or continuing education courses are not, in standard cases, acceptable for graduate transfer. However, courses completed at high levels through an accredited university or local district program may be considered by the program director and approved by the Dean of the Hufstedler School of Education for partial credit transfer.
  6. Coursework being considered for transfer must be equivalent to Alliant coursework for which it is being applied. Students are required to submit transcripts, catalog course descriptions and other documentation.
  7. All coursework must be completed successfully at credit or B levels or higher.

SERC
The HSOE SERC (Student Evaluation Review Committee) may be convened by the campus program director when there is concern that a HSOE student or program candidate may not successfully complete the program’s coursework or comprehensive examination and move into Candidacy, may not successfully complete Candidacy, or may not be recommended for a credential. The SERC process involves several faculty members in the program and campus student support services staff. The SERC meets with the student to discuss concerns, reasons for referral, reasons for dismissal from the Shirley M. Hufstedler School of Education, plans for remediation, and SERC recommendations. The SERC committee is a recommending body and the ultimate decision based on the SERC process is made by the System-wide Director. This decision can then be appealed to the HSOE Dean. Please refer to the Alliant International University Student Handbook for additional information regarding the “Student Code of Conduct” and “Problem Solving and Informal Dispute Resolution Guidelines.”

Requirements for Admission


Applicants to Educational Practice and Policy programs must satisfy the requirements stipulated in the “Application Procedures” section of the Alliant University catalog, and must also meet the following criteria:

Degrees: Candidates must possess at least a bachelor’s degree or higher from an institution of higher education that is regionally accredited in the US, or from its international equivalent.

GPA: Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 (some programs require a higher GPA, see below for exceptions)

Recommendations: Each candidate must provide two written confidential recommendations from those who can attest to the applicant’s abilities, interests, and proven accomplishments in education.

Transcripts: Official transcripts must be submitted from all accredited institutions of higher education attended by the candidate. When official transcripts are not immediately available, candidates may supply unofficial documents and be admitted on a conditional basis.

Personal essay: A two-page personal essay describing the following is required:

  • the professional organizations to which you belong,
  • honors, activities and other creative accomplishments, and
  • a brief autobiographical statement including future professional plans.

Interview: Student must have an interview with the relevant HSOE Admissions Committee.

Upon receipt and review of all documentation, the candidate will be considered for final admission. Final admissions decision will be made by the Program Faculty.

Additional Requirements:

  • Applicants to the Teaching, Educational Specialist, and Administrative Services Credential Programs must also give evidence of passing CBEST scores.
  • All Intern Program applicants must concurrently be successfully recommended for the relevant CCTC Intern Teaching credential.
  • Applicants to the Administrative Services Credential Program must submit a valid CCTC Teaching or Services Credential.

Master Plan of Study


Degrees are posted to the official university transcript through the Registrar’s Office at Candidate request. All coursework is posted to the transcript at the end of each semester/term. Certificates are issued directly to the Candidate at the conclusion of the certificate programs. Completion of degree program is verified by the Registrar as per the Master Plan of Study. All courses below are three units (3) unless otherwise noted.

Candidates enrolled in the HSOE MAE Teacher Credentialing Program are strongly encouraged to pursue their Program to completion of their MAE: Teaching degree. Additional coursework to the requisite credential coursework (masters level credit) is noted below:
