Applied Criminology: MS (Fresno, Irvine, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco and Online)


The study of Applied Criminology teaches students to scientifically study crime, preparing them for careers in: criminal justice, law enforcement (local, state, or federal), victim and social psychological services, border security, education, fire and medical services, and corrections, probation, and parole. 

The program is offered in an on-ground executive format (i.e., an average of one weekend per month) with online study components.  A fully online version of the program is also available.

Program Outcomes


Students will be able demonstrate:

  • An understanding of offender-victim dynamics.
  • An understanding of the American criminal justice system.
  • An understanding of the laws and procedures that directly influence work with offenders and victims.
  • An understanding of the importance of evidence-informed policy and practice to advancing criminology.
  • An understanding of the role culture has in criminogenic issues.

Specialized Admissions Requirement


All prospective applicants must satisfy the requirements stipulated in the “Admissions and Registration” section of the University catalog. Prospective applicants must also submit an application that requires completion of three essays (“Please tell us more about your interest in the field of Criminology;” and “What competencies do you wish to gain from participation in this program?’ and “What do you believe you will contribute to the CSFS learning environment?”.  Additionally students will be asked to submit a resume. 

Applicants will be evaluated based upon their successful compliance with the criteria outlined above.  Additionally, prior professional and educational experience will also be considered.

Criminal Behavior Concentration


8 units

Designed for students interested in understanding offenders from a motivational, psychological, social perspective. Designed to enhance the knowledge base for students aspiring to law enforcement, correctional, investigative or consulting careers. This concentration supplements a strong educational base in law, research, theory and applied criminology with eight units of concentration-specific courses.

Cybercrime and Technology Concentration


8 units

Designed for students interested in exploring how technology affects both the commission of crime and our efforts to combat it. Designed to enhance the knowledge base for students aspiring to law enforcement, intelligence or analysis, risk management, and investigative or consulting careers. This concentration supplements a strong educational base in law, research, theory and applied criminology with eight units of concentration-specific courses.

Global Crime and Homeland Security Concentration


8 units

Designed for students interested in understanding crime from a global perspective, as well as how we defend against the proliferation of transnational crime and terrorism. Designed to enhance the knowledge base for students aspiring to law enforcement, intelligence or analysis, investigative or consulting careers, international policy, or careers working with victims of this special type of criminal activity. This concentration supplements a strong educational base in law, research, theory and applied criminology with eight units of concentration-specific courses.

Victimology Concentration


8 units

Designed for students interested in understanding crime and its impact on victims, this concentration aims to enhance the knowledge base for students aspiring to careers law enforcement, advocacy, policy and prevention, or consulting. This concentration supplements a strong educational base in law, research, theory and applied criminology with eight units of concentration-specific courses.
